4 Places You Can’t Miss in the Algarve, Portugal

If you’re heading to the Algarve and don’t want to miss the good stuff, this is for you.

We’ve been exploring this coastline with travellers from all over the world since 2019, and these four spots in the Algarve never fail to impress. They’re the kind of places that stay with you, where you’ll take those photos, have that moment of silence (or laughter), and think: “Yep, this is what I came for.”

This guide explains what makes Benagil, Carvoeiro, Praia da Marinha and Algar Seco so special, with tips on access, safety and the best moments. It will be updated whenever needed to make it more complete or to add new, relevant information.

At the end, you’ll find answers to frequently asked questions and an option to see everything in one day on our tours.

Don't Miss

✅ Benagil Cave
One of the most famous sea caves in the world, with a natural “eye” in the ceiling. Since August 2024, swimming or landing inside is prohibited; only guided tours can take you close. You can also see the cave from above, along the Seven Hanging Valleys trail.

✅ Praia da Marinha:
Voted one of Europe’s top 10 beaches and among the world’s 100 best, with golden cliffs, clear water, and the iconic “Heart of the Algarve”

✅ Carvoeiro:
Once a fishing village, now a peaceful coastal town with golden sand, colourful houses, and a cosy, friendly vibe. Great for a swim, an ice cream, or a long seafood lunch. The easy 600-metre boardwalk starting in Carvoeiro is a must for epic views.

✅ Algar Seco:
A wild stretch of cliffs carved by the sea, with rock pools, and natural “balconies” over the sea. Don’t miss A Boneca, a cave with two windows that frame the sea.

1. Benagil Cave

The Benagil Cave (also known as Algar de Benagil) is one of the world’s most famous sea caves. Carved by the sea over thousands of years, it has a perfect round skylight in the roof that lets sunlight pour onto the golden sand and turquoise water below.

From above, you can see the huge sinkhole that forms the cave’s dome; it’s just as impressive from the top as it is inside.

Best Photo/Viewpoints in Benagil

We can’t deny it, the most iconic photo is inside the cave, but access is now restricted. But since access is now restricted, here’s the next best thing: viewing it from above. It’s a completely different perspective, and we love it.

You can reach the top of the Benagil Cave directly from the car park, right by the short trail leading to the algar (the hole in the cave ceiling).

Access to the Benagil cave interior is now restricted:
Since 13 August 2024, it’s forbidden to land on the internal beach or swim into the cave. Only small guided groups are allowed to get close, with limits on boat numbers and mandatory safety kit (life jackets and helmets).

2. Praia da Marinha

Set in Caramujeira, Praia da Marinha is regarded as one of the most beautiful beaches in Portugal and Europe. It’s one of the top 10 beaches in Europe and among the top 100 in the world, recognised by the Michelin Guide and other international rankings.

The scene combines eroded limestone cliffs, crystal‑clear water and rock formations such as arches and needles.

Finding the “Heart of the Algarve” viewpoint

  • Where it is:

The famous heart shape isn’t a separate rock, it’s the double sea arch at Marinha.

From the clifftop, when you line up the two arches just right, they form a heart. Publications often use this angle in brochures and guides.

  • How to find it (5-7 mins):

From the main car park, face the sea and follow the clifftop path towards Benagil (the start of the Seven Hanging Valleys trail is just beyond the picnic tables).

Within a few minutes you’ll see the double arches. Keep to the marked path and look for the viewpoint behind the arches.

  • Safety first:

Some “photo spots” sit right on the cliff edge and are not accessible or safe , stay behind the fence/rail and stick to the main path; the heart angle is visible from safe viewpoints too.

  • Photo tip:

    Hold the camera slightly higher and tilt down to align the arches. Best light is early morning (fewer people, softer colours);

3. Carvoeiro

Carvoeiro is a former fishing village full of charm. With its colourful houses, relaxing beach, and laid-back vibe, it’s the kind of place where you’ll want to stop, breathe, and stay a while. Perfect for families, couples, or anyone after a slower pace.

Set in a horseshoe-shaped bay backed by those colourful houses, its beach is beautiful! The small bay is perfect for a quick swim or just stretching your legs on the sand.

Around town, you’ll find nice cafés, local restaurants, and plenty of spots for a photo (or an ice cream).

If you fancy a scenic stroll, follow the Carvoeiro Boardwalk: an easy, 600 metres wooden walkway that hugs the cliffs and links the village to Algar Seco. It’s well-lit, has benches for breaks, and along the way you’ll find viewpoints perfect for catching the sunset, plus panels with fun facts about the local plants and wildlife.

Tips for your Carvoeiro visit

  • Wander the centre:

Explore the narrow streets with whitewashed houses and colourful façades.

And seek out the Chapel of Nossa Senhora da Encarnação on the clifftop and enjoy the panoramic view.

  • Have lunch like a local:

Try grilled seafood or a cataplana (typicall dish from Algarve) at one of the beachside restaurants.

  • When to go:

In peak season (June to August) the village fills up; visit in spring or autumn for a more peaceful vibe.

4. Algar Seco

Just a few minutes from the centre of Carvoeiro, Algar Seco is where things get wild, geologically speaking.

The rock formations of Algar Seco

Algar Seco is a maze of cliffs, caves, and rock “windows” carved by the wind and sea. From natural balconies over the sea to narrow passages and blowholes, there’s something to explore at every turn.

The star attraction is “A Boneca”: a small cave on a rock pinnacle shaped (with a bit of imagination) like a doll. Inside, two natural windows perfectly frame the coastline. Space is tight, so expect to queue for a photo and take turns so everyone can enjoy the view.

The limestone cliffs are filled with marine fossils over 24 million years old, but it’s the landscape that steals everyone’s attention.

Algar Seco Natural Pool & Cliff Jumps

Down by the rocks, you’ll find a natural pool that forms with the tides. On calm days, it’s a great spot for a refreshing dip, or simply to admire the way the sea has sculpted the stone.

Around the area, there are also spots where locals and adventurous visitors go cliff jumping, with heights ranging from a few metres to over ten.

Safety tip: Only swim or jump when the sea is calm, and always check the depth and for hidden rocks first. Wear sturdy footwear, as the rocks can be uneven and slippery.

Frequently Asked Questions about Benagil, Marinha, Carvoeiro & Algar Seco

Can I swim into Benagil Cave or land on the beach inside?

No. Since August 2024 it’s forbidden to swim into the cave or land on its beach for safety and conservation reasons. Only guided tours are allowed to approach, with mandatory gear and limited time inside.

Is the Carvoeiro boardwalk difficult? Do I need special gear?

The boardwalk is about 600 metres long and easy to walk. It has handrails and lighting, but wear comfortable shoes and be mindful at the viewpoints. Thanks to the lights you can also use it after dark.

When is the best time to visit Praia da Marinha to avoid crowds?

Spring (April–June) and autumn (September–October) offer mild weather and fewer people, so you can enjoy the scenery in peace. In summer, arrive early to get parking and a spot on the sand.

Are there restaurants or services near Algar Seco?

Yes. There’s a bar‑restaurant right by “A Boneca” where you can relax with a drink or a meal. In Carvoeiro, a short walk away, you’ll find lots of local and international food options.
